The Best Windows for a Small House

Apr. 27, 2022

Making the most of your small house is not limited to the furniture you put in it. Sometimes, the impression you make of your home is heavily influenced by the right windows you install around it. To find out which type of window is best for you, simply consider certain factors to consider when choosing the right window.

Tempered Glass Selection

Many people prefer tempered glass because it makes the window more durable and can withstand harsh weather conditions. However, the problem lies more in its necessity than in the durability itself. In extreme conditions, tempered glass may be worth the investment. However, if you don't expect to encounter any extreme conditions, then regular window glass can last for many years.

Functionality, Strength and Durability

The cheapest type of windows are picture windows - those that don't open. However, if you prefer windows that open, you may have to choose between basic types, such as single-hung, double-hung, awning, or casement windows. Awning windows are perfect for attics, while casement windows are best for convex windows.

That said, if you intend for the windows to be effective against rain and breezes and provide adequate ventilation, casement windows will usually work at best. For those who want a bit of artistry and design, special shaped windows can be made - for an additional fee. Wooden windows are usually beautiful, but require maintenance. Vinyl windows are thin and pliable, but fragile and not durable. Fiberglass and aluminum materials are better choices when it comes to durability. However, aluminum is not as insulating as fiberglass.

Cost and other factors

It's common sense, but good windows are usually expensive. Still, there are lower cost materials and options that can still give you the "look and feel" you want in a window, but with the risk of reduced durability and efficiency in use. The efficiency issues you may want to consider may be related to moisture resistance, insulation values and elevation ratings.

Moisture can be very problematic, especially for small spaces. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages when it comes to each factor that needs to be considered. Vinyl is usually moisture resistant, but they don't look amazing. Aluminum windows are durable, but they are usually expensive and prone to condensation.

For extreme weather conditions, it is recommended to use at least double-pane windows. Triple pane windows can be a bit pricey, but it's worth the extra cash because it's adequate for extreme conditions. Elevation ratings should then be carefully considered, as houses located at higher elevations may require more durable window glass - basically tempered glass to avoid air pressure breaking the window from time to time.

In general, there are no hard and fast rules about what type of windows should be used in a small house. Factors such as cost and visual appearance are usually the primary considerations. Nonetheless, it is of utmost importance that safety and efficiency should be properly addressed, as this could actually have long-term benefits or risks to your beloved home.
